From Mesa Verde, we drove along the mountain pass, through snow blizzards and via a small town called Durango, to Ridgeway State Park.
We were booked into yurts that night; large round tents with fires in them. We were so glad of somewhere warm to thaw us out after dropping to such cold temperatures. That night, we went to Ouray Hot Springs for a dip. The pools were naturally formed in the rocks and full of volcanically heated spring water. It was snowing as we got there, and it was such a strange sensation to be in a steaming pool of water outside, with snow falling on your head. I would have taken some photos but it was 'clothing optional' so no cameras were allowed in.
After the most relaxing nights sleep since I arrived in the US, we set off this morning for Moab, Utah. Moab is known as one of the winter/outdoor sports havens in Utah, its situated surrounded by mountains and state parks and is beautiful. There was a car show going on in the town today so we wandered around that and then met back up at camp to head out for a sunset picnic at Dead Horse Point in the Canyonlands State Park. The views were simply breathtaking, the pictures just cannot do them justice, and watching the sun set over the canyon edge was amazing.

Tonight a few of us went back out into Moab, hence this blog being written at 8am GMT, which was fun but only because it was somewhere new, nothing particularly special about it except that now we're in Utah you can only buy beer up to 3.2%vol because of all the mormons. A little factlet for you there.
I'd better get myself to sleep now, we have a day of hiking in the Arches National Park tomorrow so I think I'll need a good nights sleep. I hope you all enjoy the few photos I could upload tonight,

ReplyDeleteHey, those pictures of the canyon are fantastic. I cant believe how flat the tops of them are. My -shocked- face came on when I saw the rest of the guys on the edge of those rocks, so PLEASE be careful :o. You know how worried I get. Until the woman was on one of your pic's, i didnt realise that those cliff dwellings were real, i thought they were just some models becasue they were so precise:D. I bet its really strange going from one extreme weather to the other. Your second postcard came yesterday so we got such a suprise seen as though one had come the day before. It was wierd becasue the Florida one managed to reach us before the Washington D.C one :D. Gran and Grandma loved there postcards too and they were keen to show us them. It's lovely to see you looking so well and i cant believe how brown you are! Miss you lots and everyone sends there love. Love Suzanne, Mum and Dad.
